Australian Wood Packaging - Import Requirements
AQUIS in Australia has issued new detailed requirements for import of solid wood packaging that go way beyond the ISPM-15 international standard, requiring extra documentation, and time frames for fumigation. The rules also cover hardwoods and even some plywoods, unlike most other countries. AQUIS has not decided if it will accept the U.S. standards yet. 61 pages.

China has cracked down on imports of scrap since the Basel Action Network expose in March 2002. China has recently created a number of new regulations impacting product importers. It is trying to set up a full battery collection system, and is considering a shared responsibility system for used electronics, with product makers paying half the cost.

The city-state has no direct mandates on manufacturers, though there are studies on new incentives to maximize recycling. A new Green Plan was filed in 2002. New DG Environment Draft Battery Directive Unacceptable to Industry
The European Portable Battery Association (EPBA) strongly believes that the new draft battery Directive that DG Environment has just sent for European Commission Interservice Consultation does not take into account the excessive burden that it will place on the battery industry if it becomes a Directive. The costs are estimated to be between 500- 850 million per year, which is nearly a third of the industrys annual revenue.

Takeback Laws in Europe: Which Countries to Look Out for
Most European countries have been slow to enforce their packaging takeback laws -- though the U.K. has moved on 65 companies, and the Duales System Deutschland has sued hundreds of companies for using the green dot and not paying fees. Two countries have moved on electronics takeback enforcement. Steve Oliver of KPMG, U.K. takes a look at what plans the countrie have for future enforcement -- watch out! Every Business Guide to California's Plastics Recycling Law
Our 1999 report provides general guidance on how to comply with California's recycled content law for rigid plastic containers, including design suggestions, explanations of current technology, political outlook. The California Integrated Waste Management Board has filed notices with more than 1,500 companies demanding compliance information.
